Stacy Bainter has been named the 2020 Carl Sandburg College Faculty Member of the Year after students and fellow faculty members nominated her for her outstanding work in the classroom.

Bainter was recognized as the winner Tuesday during Sandburg’s virtual celebration for its 2019-20 graduates. A 2000 graduate of Carl Sandburg College’s nursing program, Bainter has taught at her alma mater since 2008, when she started as a practical nursing lab instructor.

Bainter became an adjunct instructor in the nursing assistant program in 2011 and has been a full-time instructor since 2015. She has been the program coordinator for Sandburg’s basic nursing assistant program since 2017 and is in her first year as the LPN program coordinator. Bainter also served as a health occupations teacher at the Galesburg Area Vocational Center from 2011-2015.

“I am very humbled and in awe by winning this award,” Bainter said. “This award reminds me that I am making an impact and changing lives with my students. My students and teaching complete the circle of my life.”

Prior to her teaching career, Bainter worked as a registered nurse from 2000-15 in long-term care, holding positions of floor nurse, charge nurse, supervisor, MDS coordinator, assistant director or nursing and director of nursing.

After graduating from Sandburg, Bainter went on to earn her bachelor’s in nursing from the University of Phoenix in 2007 and a master’s in nursing (nurse educator track) from McKendree University in 2015. In October 2016, she was inducted into McKendree’s chapter of Sigma Tau International Honor Society of Nursing.

“The most gratifying thing to me about being an instructor is when my students are successful with their courses (theory, lab and clinical) and pass their state exam or NCLEX and begin their new career as a certified nursing assistant (CNA) or licensed practical nurse (LPN),” Bainter said. “My heart swells when my students start building confidence in clinical of becoming a nurse, and I cut the cord to let them spread their wings. I am always right there with a push and encouragement if needed.”
